Seed phrase backup verification checklist

This is the short execution page for checking an existing seed phrase backup. It is not the full explanation of verification and it does not replace a recovery drill.

Do not write seed words, a passphrase, a device PIN, or an exact secret location on the checklist. Record only non-secret status and results.

1. Prepare the check

  • [ ] The original wallet remains accessible when possible.
  • [ ] I identified the exact backup copy and wallet it should recover.
  • [ ] I confirmed the expected word count or recovery format.
  • [ ] I know whether an optional passphrase is required.
  • [ ] I selected the wallet maker's current official recovery-check workflow.
  • [ ] I selected a known non-secret wallet identifier for the success check.
  • [ ] The environment is private, interruption-free, and free from cameras.

2. Inspect the physical record

  • [ ] Every expected word, position, plate, share, row, tile, or component is present.
  • [ ] The order and numbering are unambiguous.
  • [ ] No word, mark, punch, engraving, or tile requires guessing.
  • [ ] Paired or assembled components are oriented correctly.
  • [ ] The object can be opened and read with the tools that will actually be available.
  • [ ] Fire, water, corrosion, impact, wear, or enclosure damage has not made the data uncertain.
  • [ ] Temporary setup material and retired copies are accounted for.

3. Run the functional wallet check

  • [ ] I initiated the trusted workflow myself.
  • [ ] The seed was entered only through the intended trusted interface.
  • [ ] No website, browser extension, AI tool, cloud document, phone note, photograph, or online checker received the seed.
  • [ ] The workflow accepted the recovery input.
  • [ ] The recovered wallet matched the non-secret identifier chosen before the check.

4. Check the passphrase branch

  • [ ] The plan clearly states whether a passphrase exists without exposing it.
  • [ ] The exact passphrase was entered through the trusted workflow.
  • [ ] The seed and passphrase combination opened the intended wallet.
  • [ ] The passphrase recovery method remains available and separate from the seed when the design requires separation.

Mark this section not applicable only when the wallet truly has no optional passphrase.

5. Check every active copy

  • [ ] Each recovery-capable copy was inspected separately.
  • [ ] Each copy was matched to the intended wallet.
  • [ ] Active, secondary, and retired copies are distinguishable.
  • [ ] Every active copy has a non-secret verification date and review trigger.

6. Determine the result

ResultMeaningNext step
PassThe record is readable and opens the intended wallet.Return it to controlled storage and schedule the next review trigger.
Conditional passThe wallet matches, but storage, tools, instructions, or continuity remain weak.Correct the operational weakness without rewriting a working secret unnecessarily.
FailThe record is wrong, unreadable, incomplete, opens the wrong wallet, or cannot support the exact passphrase branch.Preserve current access. Create and verify a replacement before retiring any usable recovery path.
Exposure concernThe seed may have been viewed, copied, photographed, or entered into an untrusted system.Stop treating it as a routine verification problem and follow the exposure-response guide.

A failed check creates a controlled replacement step

The printable checklist remains the primary tool. When a copy fails, preserve current wallet access and any reliable source record while you create a replacement. Do not retire the old usable record until the new one matches the intended wallet and passes the full check.

Billfodl is the correction-first replacement when entry accuracy is the main concern. Coinplate Alpha is the permanent alternative when a large fixed-location plate fits the storage plan better.

Frequently asked questions

Does this checklist require online seed entry?

No. The seed should be entered only through the trusted wallet recovery-check or recovery workflow you deliberately selected from current official documentation.

Is the checklist a replacement for the full verification guide?

No. It is the short execution sheet. Use the full verification guide when you need the reasoning, failure branches, and wallet-match procedure.

Is the checklist a recovery drill?

No. The checklist confirms the backup itself. A recovery drill rehearses retrieval, tools, instructions, authorized people, wallet identification, and return to storage.

Should every backup copy receive its own checklist result?

Yes. Each recovery-capable copy can contain a different error and should be identified and checked separately.

What should I record on the printable checklist?

Record only non-secret context and results, such as copy ID, wallet matched, verification date, physical condition, and review trigger. Never record the seed or passphrase.
